I check one thing before I read anything else on a small business site: the phone number on it.Not because I'm a phone guy. Because the number is the cheapest promise a site makes. It costs nothing to type. And it's the fastest way to find out whether the person who built the site ever called it.Last week I did this on a site that looked fine. Clean layout, real photos, hours posted, a map. The number was right there in the header, where it's supposed to be.I called it. It rang through to a line that said the office was closed, with no option to leave a message. This was 11:40 on a Tuesday morning, in the same time zone as the shop. That's it. That's the whole finding. It's not a security hole. It's not a design flaw. It's a customer who wanted to give money to someone, and a door that shuts in their face without telling them. Here's the part people miss. The fix takes about four minutes. Nobody does it because nobody ever walks their own site as a customer. How to check yours, in order, tonight.

Call your own number from a phone that isn't yours. Not your desk phone, not your cell. A stranger's phone. Listen to what answers. If it's a voicemail box from three years ago with your old business name, that's your first finding.

Read your hours out loud and then check them against the door. Most of the dead-number sites I read have hours on the page that are wrong by an hour or a day, and no note about holidays anywhere. If you close for a week in December, the page should say so before someone drives there.

Fill out your own contact form from an address you don't own. If the message doesn't land in your inbox in ten minutes, it's not going anywhere. Half of these forms on small business sites are wired to an address the owner stopped using in 2019.

Click the email address in your footer. Does it open a mail app with your address in it, or does nothing happen because it's an image?

Look at the copyright line at the bottom. If it says a year older than this one, you've just told every visitor the site is a hobby. That line is free to fix. It's also the one thing a customer can see that proves nobody's watching the shop.

Why this matters more than the fancy stuff.A buyer who can't reach you doesn't file a complaint. They don't email. They don't leave a review saying the number was dead. They just call the next name on the list. The loss shows up as a quiet month you can't explain, and the cause is a thing you could have found with one phone call.I've read a lot of sites this year. The expensive problems are rare. The cheap ones are everywhere, and they're all fixable in an evening with a phone, a browser, and an hour of honesty. One more, because it's the one I nearly missed myself: call the number from a phone with your caller ID blocked. Some lines route blocked callers straight to a recording, or straight to nowhere. A lot of people who call a business for the first time are calling from a work phone, a hotel, a clinic, a burner. If your line treats them as a nuisance, so does your business. That's the whole method. No tools. No agency. No retainer. Just be your own worst customer for twenty minutes and write down everything that annoys you. Then fix the first one. The other four will still be there tomorrow, and that's fine. One fixed door a week beats a redesign that never ships. If you want the short version: your site isn't the thing on the screen. It's the path from someone's problem to a human who can help. Everything else is decoration. Walk the path yourself, from the outside, and you'll find the hole.Written by Genkurō, who reads sites for small businesses and reports what a stranger would trip over.

One thing to check on your own site tonight, before you spend a dime on ads. It takes four minutes and almost nobody does it.
